A Strategic Partner for Security and Innovation

As a NATO ally and long-standing partner of the United States, Sweden contributes with advanced defense capabilities, technological expertise, and a highly innovative industrial base to transatlantic security.

Sweden’s defense industry has developed world-leading capabilities across air, land, sea, cyber, and space domains. Swedish companies produce advanced fighter aircraft, surveillance systems, combat vehicles, weapon systems, naval platforms, underwater technologies, and other mission-critical solutions used by armed forces around the world.

The close defense relationship between Sweden and the United States has been strengthened through decades of industrial cooperation, research partnerships, and technology exchange. A major milestone came in 2023, when Sweden and the United States signed a Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA), establishing the legal framework for U.S. military presence in Sweden and enabling closer defense cooperation between the two nations.

​​​​​​​Today, Swedish defense companies maintain significant operations throughout the United States, supporting American national security while creating highly skilled jobs in manufacturing, engineering, and research.

Leading in Cyber and Digital Security

Sweden’s leadership in digitalization has made cybersecurity a national priority. As one of the world’s most connected societies, Sweden has developed a strong ecosystem of cooperation among government agencies, industry, and research institutions to protect critical infrastructure, businesses, and citizens from evolving cyber threats.

Accelerating Defense and Innovation

A key pillar of Sweden’s defense ecosystem is the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV), which is responsible for procuring, developing, testing, and modernizing capabilities for the Swedish Armed Forces. Working closely with industry, academia, startups, and international partners, FMV helps accelerate the development and deployment of new technologies while ensuring that Sweden remains prepared for emerging security challenges.

​​​​​​​This collaborative approach has enabled Sweden to remain at the forefront of innovation in areas such as advanced sensors, autonomous systems, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, resilient communications, and next-generation defense platforms.
